May Day Holiday Consumption Returns to Pre-Pandemic Levels
May Day holiday consumption and spending returned to pre-pandemic levels over this year's May Day holiday, with tourism, box office, transportation, entertainment, and catering sectors all experiencing a surge, reports China Daily. The five-day holiday beat the 2019 record in terms of trips made and revenue generated, boosting China's GDP. Popular tourist destinations across the nation including Beijing were flooded with millions of Chinese visitors, who set their sights on the May Day holidays to release their pent-up travel desires. A total of 274 million trips were made this year. Domestic tourism income soared 128.9 percent to 148.1 billion yuan. The national railway network transported 19.35 million passengers, about 400 percent more than in 2020.
Beijing's Daxing District Takes a Step Forward with New Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses
On May 5, Beijing's Daxing District launched ten new hydrogen fuel cell buses, which can travel up to 400 kilometers, according to a report from Sina. The buses are equipped with 28 seats, with a rated passenger capacity of up to 80 people. According to the Daxing Transportation Bureau, the district has been promoting the application of new energy and clean energy vehicles in the transportation industry. The launch of these hydrogen fuel cell buses is a significant milestone in the development of clean energy transportation in Beijing.
Beijing's Bicycle Transportation System Gets a Makeover
Bicycle travel is making a comeback in the city with the continuous improvement of the slow travel system, according to a report from the Beijing Daily. In 2020, the proportion of cycling in the city increased to 17.5 percent, up from 9.4 percent in 2014. To provide a safer and more comfortable riding experience, the municipal transportation department organized bike-sharing operation enterprises to gradually replace the existing vehicles with upgraded ones. The new bikes have solar panels for locked power, and improved brake safety and quick disassembly. The HelloBike will replace no less than 50,000 bikes in Beijing. The city has designated over 26,000 parking areas for bicycles. The upgrades are expected to provide a more efficient and sustainable bicycle transportation system in the city.
